Dance Improvisation: language and movement
Everyone with an interest for movement (mixed level)
Do your thoughts come from your minds or your bodies? How does your skin whisper? If your muscles were saying something what would it be? Our language and movement skills develop simultaneously. We learn first to communicate through sounds and gestures before we acquire spoken work. In this 6 week course we explore this synergetic process that has become our means for communication.
The classes begin with warm- up scores to awaken muscles, joints and perceptive awareness. We then focus on tuning into the stream of consciousness through movement and writing exercises that help reveal our deepest thoughts, concerns and observations. We use movement explorations, spoken and written tasks (English or Dutch), exercises of trust, awareness and observational scores. This forms the material for solo and group improvisation scores where internal landscapes transform into performative environments. I draw from my experience in Thai Massage, Contact Improvisation, Physical Theatre, Authentic Movement and contemporary dance practices.
Natalie Heller is a choreographer and dance artist. She has an MA in ‘Creative Practice’ from Trinity Laban and professional training from Dance New Amsterdam (NYC), Movement Research (NYC), Siobhan Davies Studios (London) and Ecole Supérieure de l’Enseignement de la Danse (Montpellier, France). She is interested in body awareness and in helping her students develop energy efficient movement pathways. It was on her exploration of different movement methodologies that she discovered Ashtanga Yoga, Pilates, Thai massage, Body Mind Centering, Contact Improvisation, Alexander Technique, Skinner Releasing, Feldenkrais, Klein Technique and many others. She has been taking movement workshops for over twenty years and has been trained by key players in the field (including Gill Clarke, KJ, Holmes, Malcolm Manning, Eva Karczag and many others). She has been teaching movement techniques since 2006.
